On visiting Canton

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Last month, Coach Gregg made the trip to Canton for the annual induction ceremonies at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He told us what the experience is like for him now:

“I don’t go back to Canton every year. The last time I visited was ’07, my 30th year.

It’s always a lot of fun visiting with old friends and teammates. That’s the first thing I do, look for teammates. I looked for Hornung, but he wasn’t there. Then I looked for Willie (Davis), he was there. And Jimmy Taylor was also there.

Then I looked for the guys I played against. I found Gino Marchetti. Gino and I talked for awhile. We talked about the old days and our health…that’s what’s important to us now.

I saw Anthony (Munoz) also. I had a chance to visit with him for a little while. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing he was one of the players I helped draft and helped coach.

It’s a fun thing to do even though I don’t visit every summer. Just being in Canton brings back the memories of my induction day, and it makes me remember just what it meant when I received the phone call telling me that I’d been selected to the Hall of Fame.”
